This Psalm praises the work of musicians

Music has been an important part of worship since the very beginning.

Music is a beautiful gift from God and it is everywhere in the Bible, both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. It is one of the most powerful ways to offer praise and thanks to God.

St. John Paul II wrote in his Letter to Artists how the Church needs musicians.

The Church also needs musicians. How many sacred works have been composed through the centuries by people deeply imbued with the sense of the mystery! The faith of countless believers has been nourished by melodies flowing from the hearts of other believers, either introduced into the liturgy or used as an aid to dignified worship. In song, faith is experienced as vibrant joy, love, and confident expectation of the saving intervention of God.

This respect for music is also seen in the Psalms, as music was a vital part of worship in ancient Israel.

If you are a musician and ever need encouragement to keep going, reflect on this and other passages of the Bible and see the beauty of music.

Praise God in his holy sanctuary;
    give praise in the mighty dome of heaven.
Give praise for his mighty deeds,
    praise him for his great majesty.
Give praise with blasts upon the horn,
    praise him with harp and lyre.
Give praise with tambourines and dance,
    praise him with strings and pipes.
Give praise with crashing cymbals,
    praise him with sounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath
    give praise to the Lord!

Psalm 150
