Short prayer in honor of Mary’s wounded heart

THE VIRGIN OF SORROWS

Public Domain | The MET

Philip Kosloski - published on 02/17/22

This brief prayer meditates on the wounds, or sorrows, the Virgin Mary experienced during her life on earth.

The Servite religious order has always had a deep devotion to the Sorrowful Mother, composing many prayers that honor Mary’s wounded heart.

Here is a short prayer found in their 19th-century booklet Mary in sorrow and desolation, Help of the Holy Catholic Church.

Imprint, O Lady, your wounds upon my heart,
that I may read therein sorrow and love;
sorrow, to endure every sorrow for you,
love to despise every love for yours.
