The biblical key to true freedom

True freedom consists in the ability to choose good things, instead of becoming a slave to sin.

Freedom is a complicated issue, as at face value it simply means the ability to choose what we do each day.

However, according to the Bible, freedom is about always choosing to do good.

For example, St. Paul reflects on freedom in his letter to the Galatians.

For freedom Christ set us free;
so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters.
But do not use this freedom
as an opportunity for the flesh
;
rather, serve one another through love.

Galatians 5:1, 13

This ability to choose the good is also explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to “the slavery of sin.”

CCC 1733

A Christian vision of freedom is more of an interior freedom, one that is not bound by habitual sin, but set free by the grace of Jesus Christ.

We may be “free” to choose whatever we want, but to use that freedom to sin is actually an abuse of freedom. By doing so, we are no longer free, but slaves of sin.

If sin has weighed you down, ask God to set you free, so that may use your freedom for good and not be led into the darkness of sin.
